I probably harp on this way too much but frankly, it is most likely the #1 thing keeping your Facebook ads from working.

Know your ideal customer inside and out!

That is where targeting begins by identifying all the things your ideal customer loves and those things that stress them out.

There is a really cool tool by HubSpot to create your customer avatar:
http://makemypersona.com

If you haven’t used this tool yet or otherwise done a similar exercise please do it before you ever run another ad.

On this episode, I dive into creating an extremely targeted audience and how to narrow it down by adding additional demographic or behavioral factors.

Also, I cover how to exclude certain factors that maybe you don’t want your ideal audience to have.

Check this episode out and subscribe to my podcast and leave a review.

I’d love to know what you’re thinking!

Quit keeping your free content a secret!

It would be awesome to write an epic blog post and then some semi-famous influencer just happened upon it and promoted the heck out of it for you!

However, until that time you better count on promoting your free content yourself and Facebook ads are the perfect way to do it.

On this episode, I cover the best kind of content to promote and why it makes so much sense running paid traffic to it.

These are ads you just keep running 365 days a year.

Hey Everybody,

This is my very first Special Edition of the Facebook Ads with a Twang podcast!

This is NOT the usual 10 minute or less tip but a 45 minute extravaganza.

Maybe extravaganza is a little much but it really is like a full training.

This episode is for coaches who are either new to Facebook ads or may be concerned about the technology part of it or you’ve been running ads without getting much traction.

If any of that sounds familiar then you’re in the right place.

Here is what I cover on this episode:

  • What makes Facebook ads different for coaches
  • Why coaches don’t use Facebook ads or give up quickly
  • The 5 biggest mistakes coaches make with their Facebook ads
  • The necessary steps to run a successful Facebook ads campaign
  • How to track the people who engage with your ad
  • The single best strategy you can use
  • Ad copy / Images / videos
  • Evaluating your ads - Your ads can only be as successful as your ability to measure them

So there is A LOT to this episode. You might need to listen to it a couple times to get the full effect.

On the episode I talk about my Free How Coaches Can Create Successful Facebook Ads mini-course to accompany everything I talk about.

There are 4 lessons and I included 4 bonuses. I probably went overboard.

Whether you’re new to Facebook ads or are a seasoned Facebook ads professional it is really easy to over think your ads.

I catch myself doing this all the time.

“Wow, look at this new tool that is in power editor. What does it do? Does it even work? What am I gonna test it on? How can I fit it into any of the campaigns I have running?”

“How many images do I need to test?”
“What is the best strategy?”
“How do I know if it is working?”
“What if I check the wrong box or don’t do something right?”

And on and on…

There are a lot of cool tools you can use in your Facebook ads. But if you’re not quite sure what they do and especially if ‘tech’ stuff seems overwhelming then just stick to the basics.

This episode is just about a 10 step process to follow to get your ads running.

Don’t get stuck on all the fancy new things. Keep it simple.

Simple works in your ad copy.

Simple works in your ad campaign.

Here is a 4th retargeting strategy and really it is an ‘add-on’ to other strategies.

The example I use is from episode 30 where I cover a particular strategy.

Then on this episode, I explain how to add this on.

Now I’m going to warn you. This isn’t for every market and a lot of people don’t like this approach because they feel like they’re their product/service away.

What I’m going to tell you is that there is so much more hidden value than getting the sale. You’re going to find out a lot about what your audience is thinking in regards to value and price of your offer.

Take this strategy and try it. See what shakes out and then decide.

Whatever you do follow up with those that buy and talk to them.  That insight alone is worth it.

What happens after your Facebook ad starts to really take off and you want to scale it?

Do you just up the budget to infinity?

That’s what most people do and more often than not they’re in for a rude awakening.

It makes sense though. If you’re spending $50 a day and it is working out then why not spend $500 a day?

The problem there is the Facebook algorithm. It just doesn’t work that way… ugh.

On this episode, I’m talking about how to scale in multiple ways so you can take that great ad and maximize the potential.

I pack a lot in on this so pay attention and do it right.. Otherwise, it may cost you more than you want.

What if you could train Facebook to send you the best leads?

Guess what? You can!

The way we do this is by ‘training’ or ‘seasoning’ the Facebook pixel.

On this episode, I cover the best way to train your pixel so you can get in front of more of the right people with your message.

I’m talking about things like - custom conversions, standard events, which objective to choose, how the Facebook algorithm works and how to take the information you’re getting so you can find even more ideal leads.

And - I review the best practices… at least from my experience.

Fair warning… this is a little more advanced.

So if you aren’t quite sure what a pixel is please check out episode 15 where I go over the basics.

Hope you enjoy it and please leave me a review. Thanks!

Over the last few years that Facebook ads have been around there seems to be this fear (borderline paranoia) about upsetting the algorithm by changing a running ad.

On this episode, I’m covering what you can change, what you can’t and some best practices for when you need to make a change but don’t want to screw anything up.

Some basic rules of thumb are:

  1. You can change anything in the creative - however, I prefer to duplicate the ad, leaving it in the same campaign and ad set.
  2. You cannot change the campaign objective. Even if you want to Facebook won’t let you.  So you can’t go from a traffic campaign to a conversion campaign.
  3. You can change the budget (but don’t change it too much - 50% max)
  4. You can change the end date if you selected an end date from the beginning.

Can you change the targeting? Technically yes.

However, when you change the targeting you are telling Facebook “Hey, originally I wanted to target these particular people or interests but now I want to target these instead.”

As a result, Facebook will then need to go back to the drawing board and figure out exactly what you’re looking for.

Instead, duplicate your ad set and make the changes. Then shut off the original one.

Facebook ad costs seem to be on the increase.  Actually, they’ve always been on the increase.

It is inevitable that the cost of any marketing platform will go up.

There are short-term increases - such as during the holidays when there is an influx of advertisers trying to capitalize on this time of year.

Then there are long-term increases. Like the news feed being completely full so now you’re always competing against multiple other businesses for that space.

How much are you willing to pay to be in the feed?

How relevant is your content to the audience?

These questions are crucial because the first one dictates what you can do profitably and the second tells you how Facebook sees what your advertising and therefore how much they should charge you.

If your ads don’t resonate with the audience you can bet your ad costs will go up.

You used to be able to just throw out any ole’ ad but now you really have to use your marketing skills.

Make sure you’re targeting the right people.

Have great copy and a compelling image.

Or, really consider going to video!

Facebook is all about video and the sooner you can become all about video the more your ads will work.

Check out this episode where I cover all this and a lot more...

Facebook ads can be so freakin’ frustrating.  Especially when you read about so and so ‘crushing’ it with their Facebook ads because they just made $50k last month and spent $200 on ads.

Hey, I get caught up in that kinda hype too.

What they didn’t share was that they already had a 20000 person email list or 100000 followers on Instagram.

Those kinda things are important to know.

Comparing Facebook ads is not usually a great idea because most of the time you don’t have access to all the information.

On this episode I go over why comparing isn’t a good idea and how to focus on your own ads so you can make them successful.

Only about 1 out of 5 ads actually “work” from the get-go.

So if your ads haven’t panned out just yet don’t sweat it.

I go over what you need to do and also reference some other episodes which should help with this too.

For most businesses, their ideal customer has certain days and/or times they are most likely to be on Facebook.

On this episode, I answer whether you should ‘daypart’ your Facebook ads so that they only show at certain times.

Note that dayparting is a more advanced technique and is NOT necessary for almost everybody.

Facebook has an amazing algorithm and will do its best to optimize your ads regardless.

However, if you decide you want to try dayparting then you’ll want to listen to this and learn about lifetime budgets.

Lifetime budgets can help you optimize your ads more efficiently and without making it as complicated as dayparting.

Really hope you enjoy this episode and you can access a short video tutorial about lifetime budgets by going here:

Here is the third retargeting strategy I have shared and this might be the easiest.

I would love to tell you I think all this up so I could take full credit but really most of the strategies are ones I have come up with through countless hours of reading, watching and listening other Facebook ads and media buying experts.

My goal is to make it simple and give it you so you can implement it quickly without getting stressed out.

This strategy just involves either taking existing Facebook Live videos or running a new Facebook video ad to some original content and then retargeting those that watch at least 50% of the video(s).

Don’t overthink the video or the process. Just implement it!

Because I know the setup of this is often what is confusing I have created a short video that you can access by going here:

Whenever I talk to people about Facebook ads they almost always are concerned with the ‘technique’ part of it.

Target audiences, the perfect image, the latest greatest feature… the insiders secret that will help their ads dominate the market.

The thing is, with Facebook ads it is just like running a business.

80% (or more) of success is your mindset!

Now, you might be thinking… “C’mon Ben. Mindset sounds like some crazy mumbo jumbo. I just want to know who to target.”

I can tell you all day how to input your ads. What copy to have. Images. Placements. Pixels… the whole 9.  But the reality of it is if you don’t have your mindset straight and understand the value you’re bringing to the table for your customers then your ads won’t have huge success.

Yes, you can get by but you don’t want to get by. You want to have a freakin’ phenomenal ad. Right?

On this episode, I go over why mindset is so important and what you need to know in order to make your ads successful.

I really enjoyed this episode and I hope you do too.

See ya there!

With everything that’s been going on in the world of Facebook ads, it seems like a lot of entrepreneurs I talk to are forgetting the basics.

Building your email list is a huge deal.  It is also huge to know exactly what you’re going to do with the list but that’s a different episode.

Email lists are still here. Still viable and can make all the difference in your business.  You own your list.

On episode 34 I’m talking about how to create a simple funnel and driving traffic to it using Facebook ads.

Remember a funnel is nothing more than a process you put prospects through to turn them into customers.

Building your email list using an ad is one way.

Sending out follow up emails with more offers are another.

Your list is sacred. Don’t put people on it just to have a big list. A big list that won’t convert doesn’t do you any good.

Another thing a good list can do for you is to help you create a much bigger ‘lookalike’ audience.

We can actually take our email lists, upload it to Facebook and ask them to match our list with other people who are very similar in characteristics.

Now our list of 1000 becomes 2 million lookalikes we can run our Facebook ads to.

Find out how to do this here on a quick video I made for you:

Facebook ads do NOT have to be complicated.

Getting caught up in retargeting, bots, exclusion audiences, fancy videos and on and on does not always add to the bottom line.

On this episode, I go over creating a simple Facebook and the components that make them work.

Will this work every single time, in every market with every product or service?

Not likely!

What I cover are the basics for creating ads that work by keeping everything really simple.

We don’t need all the hype.

Just give me some great copy, a compelling image, the right audience and a product or service that they will love and I’ll give you a successful Facebook ad.

Facebook Live can be massively powerful if you’re using it.

If you’re just starting out or don’t have a lot of followers you can use Facebook ads to promote your Facebook live videos.

On this episode, I cover why Facebook live is important.

Where you should go live (business page, personal page or group)

What you can do with your Facebook live videos.

And I cover the 4 key things to remember when doing Facebook live.

Two of the BEST things about using Facebook ads to promote your Facebook live videos are:

  1. You get people who don’t know you to see your awesome content
  2. You can retarget video viewer of your Facebook live

Because this can be a little tricky I have created two videos to help out.

C’mon over to:  http://onefocusmarketing.com/episode32

And I’ll have those videos waiting for you.

Have you thought about what you should and more importantly what you shouldn’t do about your Facebook ads during the holidays?

On this episode, I cover what to expect during the holidays and answer questions about whether you should start, stop or pause your ads.

Last year during the 2016 election Facebook ads went totally haywire.

That was not typical. At least I hope it doesn’t become the new typical.

Remember that retargeting will be more important than ever and being more personal with your ads will help you stand out.

You’re going to be competing against the big box retailers for news feed space and your ads better be 100x more relevant than theirs.

That is the only way to beat their ad spend.

Retargeting method #2 is all about making it personal.

People buy from people they know and trust.  If they like you that is a bonus.

They just want to validate they are making the right decision and that you can solve their problem.

By making yourself more ‘real’ to them you will help them validate.

This episode is how we make it personal.

You may have to get uncomfortable a little bit but that is part of being in business.

The best way to make it personal is by doing a video… I give you an example on the podcast.

However, I do cover 2 different ways so if you really don’t want to do a video you have another option.

You’ll want to create a 4-day retargeting audience and a 14-day retargeting audience.

Setting this up is not that hard and I’ve got this explainer video in the show notes on how to do it:

https://youtu.be/1_-kiOMjr38

Put this in your grab bag of ads and it will definitely help you get results.

Should you even be using Facebook ads to promote your business?

The short answer is - probably.

I didn’t use to be a believer. In fact, I resisted Facebook ads when they very first came out.

Then I started losing clients because they were going to do Facebook ads against my advice and hired somebody else.

So, I jumped in head first and haven’t looked back.

I have seen ads work in the craziest of niches where I thought you couldn’t make them profitable.

On this episode, I’m going to go over the ins and outs of what types of businesses are best suited for Facebook ads.

I’m also covering the 1 thing you must know before you even think about starting a Facebook ad campaign.

Retargeting! I hear it all the time.

You got to be retargeting.

What I hear very little of is the strategy.

There are several retargeting strategies and on this episode, I’m going to cover what I call the - ‘Dang, they’re everywhere’ method.

As you might have guessed this method is intended to make you an automatic celebrity.

We do this by running ads containing testimonials and case studies or other social proof about your amazing products, services or how awesome you are.

I’m going to cover the ins and outs of this strategy.

WARNING: To make this work you really have to retarget both on and off of Facebook.

You can just retarget on Facebook which will be effective but not quite as effective.

This is an advanced technique but at some point, you’re gonna want to have this in your arsenal.

This may come as a surprise but you don’t always want to show your ads to everybody.

In fact, you only want to show it to the right people.  Shocker. I know.

Say you have somebody who signed up for a webinar. Do you want to keep showing them the same ad to register for the same webinar?

Probably not. Not a good user experience and a waste of ad spend.

This is why we create ‘exclusion’ audiences.

On this episode, I’m going to cover in more detail what an exclusion audience is and how to create one.

Also, I have created a video tutorial and checklist to make sure you’re setting them up right.

Optimization means to basically have your ads delivered using a certain method to get the desired result.

Hey, that almost sounded like I know what I’m talking about.

You have several optimization options depending on the campaign objective.

On this episode, I cover what each of the options are based on choosing a ‘conversion’ objective and which one is right for you.

Also, I’m including a video on where to find the optimization options and how to choose.

It happens. You’re humming along, happy-go-lucky, not a care in the world… your Facebook ads are doing fine and life is good.

Then the dreaded email from Facebook.

It reads something like this: “Um, your ads suck, we’re not gonna tell you why and we aren’t gonna run them anymore. Also, you can’t do anything about it. This is final.”

Ok, maybe it is not exactly like that but it is pretty close.

Often you never find out exactly why it got banned. The dispute process is not really a process because you don’t get to participate and ‘plead your case’.

Somebody looks at it and gives it the thumbs up or down. Guess how often the thumbs up happens?  Not much.

So, much like cancer, heart disease, stroke and most other western diseases, the best cure is prevention. It ain’t perfect but if you can keep it from happening rather than trying to fix it afterward you’re much better off.

On this episode, I’m going to get into the nitty-gritty on the best practices to keep your account up and running.

Here is episode 25.

Technically there really isn’t a ‘like’ objective for Facebook ads but rather an ‘engagement’ objective.

Question is should you spend the money on it.

On this episode, I cover the pros and the cons of running this type of campaign.

Whether or not a ‘like’ campaign is right for your business.

Also, I’ll go over how to set up the campaign itself and what you’ll need to keep in mind during setup.

AND the #1 thing you must have in order for a like campaign to work.

Ok, I’ll tell you now.  You must have EXTREMELY valuable content.

Since Instagram is a placement selection when you’re running Facebook ads it seems like we should talk about it.

Currently, Instagram has 400 million DAILY active users. That is a lot!

The demographics skew towards women and ages under 30.

However, that is changing fast.

From an ads standpoint, business to consumer is much more effective than business to business.

Even with these huge numbers, my current suggestion is not to use Instagram until you have mastered the Facebook ads news feed for brand new cold traffic.

That being said Instagram is great during retargeting and for pure content.

Some of the things I review on this episode are what makes a great Instagram ad and Instagram ad requirements.

Here are some tips for effective ads:

Design these separately from your Facebook ads

  1. Visually appealing - that goes without saying though right?
  2. Use a lot of contrast for each image
  3. Use diagonal lines where possible
  4. No text in the image

Instagram ad requirements:
